Dental Hygiene
Allied Health Major
OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
This program will prepare the student for licensing by the State Board for Dentistry of New York State to practice dental hygiene. Career opportunities abound in private solo and group practices, hospitals and other health service agencies, public schools and other institutions. Traditional and advanced functions in oral health are taught to clinical proficiency.
The career of dental hygiene is projected to be one of the 30 fastest growing occupations. The population growth and greater retention of natural teeth will stimulate demand for dental hygienists. The employment of dental hygienists is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2008 in response to greater demand for dental care and the greater substitution of hygienists for services previously performed by dentists.
Each student actively participates in clinical dental hygiene experiences in the college dental hygiene clinic, as well as at off-campus sites, including hospitals.
