Electrical Engineering Technology/Electronics
Science & Engineering Major
OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
The SUNY Orange course of study prepares students for employment in a variety of entry-level careers in electronics and related occupations. Recent program revisions allow students to pursue career paths in semi-conductor manufacturing technology, avionics, and other hi-tech fields. Electrical Engineering Technicians work with electronics engineers to design, develop, and manufacture industrial and consumer electronic equipment including sonar, radar, and navigational equipment and computers, radios, televisions, stereos, and calculators. They are involved in fabricating, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment. Others inspect newly installed equipment or instruct or supervise the technicians' installation, assembly, or repairs.
As part of their daily duties, the technicians set up testing equipment and conduct tests, and then they analyze the results. They must also prepare reports, sketches, graphs, and drawings to describe the electronic systems and their characteristics.
Most technicians work in one of three general areas: product development (electronics development technicians), manufacturing and production (electronics manufacturing and product technicians, or service and maintenance (electronics service technicians).
There is reason to believe that the electronics industry will remain as one of the main industries in the United States over the next ten years. Consumer demand for products such as the large screen televisions, videocassette recorders, compact-disc players, and personal computers are constantly changing through upgrading. Multimedia and interactive products are expanding rapidly as are computer and telecommunications products. The demand for these items should stimulate growth in the electrical industry, and employment opportunities for electrical engineering technicians should increase as fast as the average through 2008.
