OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
A Laboratory Technician makes routine tests in a medical laboratory for use in the diagnosis of disease. The tech may perform any of the following duties: conduct chemical analysis of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid; perform blood counts; conduct blood tests for transfusions; innoculate fertilized eggs, broths, or other bacteriological media with organisms and record the changes; test vaccines for sterility and viruses; draw blood from patients; document and record any and all information on tests, patients, processes used.
The medical laboratory technician program prepares the student to perform general laboratory procedures and routines under the supervision of a physician or laboratory director. This program also qualifies the graduate to serve as a quality control technician in almost any manufacturing facility. This person tests products to see if they are safe to use and meets performance standards. These technicians would work for testing laboratories or in research and development centers. Laboratory technicians are employed in almost every kind of manufacturing industry that employs chemists or chemical engineers.
Overall, job opportunities for laboratory testing technicians are expected to grow about as fast as the average through 2008. Advances in technology will affect the growth of new job possibilities; new testing procedures, for example, will lead to an increase in testing.
