Office Technologies
Business Major
OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
The successful completion of this program will prepare students to enter employment as an Office Assistant. Three emphasis areas are provided along with the common core courses to enter the office support staff as a Legal Office Assistant, an Office Manager, or a Secretary/Word Processor. Each course of study is tailored towards one specific area mentioned above. In general, the daily routine of the office assistant changes with the needs of the specific job and the employer. Some assistants can spend a day typing or filing, while others enter data at a computer terminal. They can be called upon to operate photocopiers, fax machines, and other office equipment; they can be expected to prepare mailings, proofread copies; they can handle receptionist duties such as answering the telephone and delivering messages. The specific duties assigned can also vary by level of experience; for example, an experienced assistant might even be given more responsibilities such as maintaining financial records, verifying statistical reports for accuracy and completion, making travel arrangements, taking inventory of equipment and supplies, answering questions on departmental services and functions, or helping to prepare invoices or budgetary requests.
Plentiful job opportunities are expected for general office work due to employment growth, the large size of the occupation, and turnover. Employment of office personnel is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2008.
