Course Placement Assessment

All newly admitted students are required to complete the Placement Assessment prior to registering unless they have been granted a waiver based on previous course work. We recommend you complete the Placement Assessment within two weeks of your acceptance to the College. After you have taken the Assessment test, we will make an appointment for you to meet with an advisor to register for your classes or advise you of walk-in hours for registration.

What you should know

Accuplacer is administered to all new students to ensure academic success in English and mathematics, as these courses are foundational to virtually every program offered at SUNY Orange.

Why?

Accuplacer determines appropriate course placement to correspond to the student's skill level. Using these placements, students will begin classes at a level where they are most likely to succeed.

Who?

All newly admitted students are required to complete the placement assessment prior to registration, unless they request and are granted a waiver based on previous course work.

How?

Accuplacer is a computer-based adaptive assessment delivered via the Internet. The multiple choice questions vary in number from 12-25. The computer uses your answers to questions to determine the level of difficulty of each successive question. Using this technique, we can determine your skill level on each section of the assessment by asking relatively few questions. The assessment is untimed (except for the essay portion). A proctor will be available to assist with problems that relate to the assessment format or computer usage. You may only take the Assessment once. Retesting is invalid unless specifically authorized by Department Chairs or Director of Advising & Counseling.

Waiver Criteria

A waiver from the English portion of the Placement will be granted to new students for completion of Freshman English I with a grade of C (2.0) or better. A waiver from the math portion of the Assessment will be granted for completion of college-level math with a grade of C (2.0) or better. Waivers may also be granted for AP scores in appropriate courses with a score of 3 or better. All courses must have been taken at an accredited college or university. A waiver does not guarantee transfer credit. If you completed a math course or took the math assessment more than 3 years ago, you may wish to contact the Chair of the Math Department to determine if a retest is recommended.

Students with Disabilities

Students who need to take the Placement Assessment and are eligible for special accommodations should ensure that the appropriate documentation, reflecting the specified accommodations, is forwarded to the Advocate for Students with Disabilities. Please contact the office at 341-4077 to discuss accommodations and to schedule a Placement Assessment session.

Ability to Benefit

Students who do not hold a valid H. S. diploma or G.E.D. from an accredited High School must speak to an Admissions Counselor and must meet minimum requirements to be academically eligible for Financial Aid.

Taking the Assessment

A photo I.D. is required. You will be asked some background information such as Student I. D.
