Accreditation, Certification and Licensing

Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)

SUNY Orange's Radiologic Technology program is approved by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), an accreditation mechanism acceptable to the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The ARRT is the nationally recognized organization that provides voluntary certification exams and Operator Consoleregistration status information for radiographers.

ARRT uses "certification" to describe the awarding of a certificate after an individual satisfies all eligibility requirements including the certification exam. "Registration" is the annual renewal or routine maintenance of the registration of an ARRT certificate.

New York State Licensing in Radiologic Technology

"Licensing" is most commonly used to refer to state laws. The state, not the ARRT, is the authority that administers the license and grants an individual permission to practice Radiologic Technology within that state. Application for, and renewal of a state license, is separate from the ARRT certification process and varies from state to state. In New York, Radiologic Technologists must be licensed by and registered with the New York State Department of Health's Bureau of Environmental Radiation Protection. Proof of having passed the ARRT examination and successfully completed an accredited course of study in Radiologic Technology is required for licensure. JRCERT does not play a role in New York State licensure.

Graduates who pass the ARRT examination are then eligible to apply for a New York State Department of Health License to practice Radiologic Technology.

Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT)

The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) promotes excellence in education and elevates the quality and safety of patient care through the accreditation of educational programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance, and medical dosimetry. The JRCERT is the only agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), for the accreditation of traditional and distance delivery educational programs in radiography, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance, and medical dosimetry.

Accreditation with the JRCERT is voluntary. The Radiologic Technology Program sponsored by Orange County Community College is accredited by the JRCERT. The current length of accreditation is 5 years.
