Quality Bus Owner Has Grown Former Startup to Two Locations, More Than 340 Employees

PHOTO: Michael Martucci of Quality  BusWhen Michael Martucci saw a need by local school districts for affordable busing options, and an opportunity to fill that void by starting his own company, he mustered the courage to apply to several local banks for a sizeable startup loan and he fell back upon the experiences and knowledge he gleaned as a student at both SUNY Orange and Marist College.

Today, nearly seven years after establishing Quality Bus Service LLC, Martucci oversees a local company that employs more than 340 Orange County based workers and safely serves thousands of local school-aged and pre-school children each day. Quality Bus operates out of Orange County locations in both Port Jervis and Goshen.

It was while Martucci was working in the commercial vehicle sales division of the Freightliner Coporation, selling school buses to municipalities, that he first realized there was a significant demand by school districts for affordable busing alternatives.

Fiscal constraints were squeezing local public school districts, and Martucci believed he could convince districts of the cost savings potential delivered by public-private partnerships related to busing. Building upon his relationships within the area’s school districts, and a desire to be business for himself, Martucci crafted a business plan, purchased three school buses and procured three student transportation contracts in 2007.

Ten months later, he had successfully bid for and was awarded his first significant transportation contract:  the Port Jervis City School District.

“As a SUNY Orange student, I received more than a great education—I was afforded the ability to build local relationships that laid the foundation for my company’s success in the county,” Martucci says today. ”As a President’s Scholar, I was fortunate to directly benefit from the generosity of the College. Today, I am honored to return my experiences to others who follow a similar path, and support the many SUNY Orange students who bring immeasurable value to our community.”

 Martucci arrived at SUNY Orange in 2003 as a recipient of the President’s Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement. The President’s Scholarship is a full-tuition award presented to select Orange County high school graduates who hold a 92 average and graduate within the top 10 percent of their high school class. Martucci graduated from the College, as a member of the Honors Program, in 2005 and transferred to Marist, where he’d earn a bachelor’s degree in 2007. He returned to Marist to earn his MBA in 2012.

In addition to his support of SUNY Orange, Martucci is a member of the President’s Circle of the Community Foundation of Orange & Sullivan, and serves as secretary on the Board of Directors of the New York Bus Contractor’s Association. He is also a business partner of the Orange-Ulster BOCES Career & Technical Education Center and generously supports the President’s Scholarship fund at the College.
