STATEMENT BY DR. KRISTINE YOUNG ON THE PASSING OF BEN GILMAN
Former Congressman Passed Away Today
“The SUNY Orange community was saddened to learn of former Congressman Gilman’s passing this morning. He was a public servant of the highest order and our thoughts are with his wife Georgia and the entire family,” said Dr. Kristine Young, SUNY Orange president. “Ben served his country with distinction in the Army Air Corps and for 30 years in Washington. He fought to preserve basic human rights around the world, and his work made life better for untold numbers of citizens in many countries, as well as at home.
“Ben’s legacy lives on in the collection of his papers, publications, photos and other items from his career in Congress that he donated to the College upon his retirement. Our Gilman Center for International Education is a place where students, faculty and scholars can unite in the pursuit of academic excellence and intellectual inquiry, under the light of Ben’s remarkable career. Many people around the world will forever be grateful for Ben Gilman’s compassion and service.”
