Online, Adaptive Learning Software will help Students in Developmental Math Courses

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – New York State Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) has announced an $11,000 grant to fund SUNY Orange’s purchase of Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) software, a web-based assessment and learning system that the College will use in support of students within its mathematics curriculum.

The ALEKS adaptive learning online software is a groundbreaking tool that assesses students’ knowledge at any time and instructs them only in the topics they are ready to learn. The software ensures that students learn the subject matter at their own pace; ALEKS knows when to review the material and knows when students have mastered it.

“The College would like to begin using the ALEKS software with students who are required to take one or more developmental classes,” said Dr. Kristine Young, president of SUNY Orange. “We truly thank Assemblyman Skoufis for his assistance in obtaining funding for this software.”

The program will be employed to assist students taking developmental mathematics courses. Students would have access to ALEKS in the Mathematics Tutorial Center, where staff members can offer assistance. Under the supervision of the College’s mathematics faculty, students can continue to utilize ALEKS beyond their developmental courses as long as they are interested and able. The software is expected to be in use soon.

As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS also provides the advantages of around-the-clock, one-on-one online instruction from virtually any web-based computer.

“The ALEKS software will provide SUNY Orange with an additional tool and resource necessary to teach students in an individualized and innovative way,” said Skoufis. “This funding will provide licenses for 220 students to master topics they need to learn in a new way and I am proud to help them be a part of that pioneering process.”
