College is Among 849 Colleges and Universities Nationally to Earn the Designation

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – In recognition of its broad programming and support services for veterans, SUNY Orange has been designated as a Military Friendly® School by Victory Media Inc. for the fourth time in the past six years

Through its Military Friendly® Schools program, Victory Media provides service members transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities. First published in 2009, the Military Friendly® Schools designation is awarded to those colleges, universities and trade schools throughout the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.

SUNY Orange received a Silver classification, indicating that the College finished within 30 percent of the 10th-ranked school on an expansive military-centric survey. Schools were listed in the following categories: Top 10, gold, silver, bronze, and designated. SUNY Orange was also listed as a Military Friendly school in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The 2018 Military Friendly® Schools list will be published in the December issue of “G.I. Jobs” magazine and can be found at

SUNY Orange is Military Friendlly for 4th time in last six yearsInstitutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. For the first time, student survey data was taken into consideration for the designation. More than 1,300 schools participated in the 2017-18 survey with 849 receiving the designation. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

“We value the many contributions that veterans provide to our College community, but more importantly we appreciate and respect their service to our country, along with their commitment to protecting and preserving the freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis,” said Dr. Kristine Young, SUNY Orange president. “What better way to show our appreciation than by assuring that they are able to maximize their educational benefits, and supporting them as they pursue a degree.”

Daniel Nichols, chief product officer at Victory Media, added, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans. Military Friendly® helps veterans make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”

To its nearly 300 veteran students, SUNY Orange offers a variety of services, including specialized academic advising, transfer counseling transition assistance, personal counseling and accommodations for military students with disabilities. The College also provides a Veterans Resource Room where students can meet recreationally, gather to study and support each other. An active student Veterans Club provides another way for veterans to connect and participate in College and community life. Collaborations with veterans services agencies and organizations within the county also bring an added array of resources to the campus.

Veterans and military personnel have also recently received another boost to their ability to utilize their G.I. Bill benefits. Signed into law in August, the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017 has lifted the 15-year time limit on use of GI Bill benefits. Military personnel who fulfill their contracts and transition to civilian life as veterans on and after Jan. 1, 2018, will have no time limitations on the use of their benefits.
