Criminal Profiling and the Mad Bomber

Dates: 10/11/2018 (Thu): 7:00 pm
Category: Campus Events

“F.P.” were the signature letters of the Mad Bomber who terrorized New York City between 1940 and 1956. The bomber planted explosives in theaters, offices, phone booths, storage lockers, and restrooms in public buildings, including Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station, Radio City Music Hall, the New York Public Library, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, the RCA Building, Macy’s Department Store, and the New York City Subway.

With traditional police methods seemingly useless, the NYPD, enlisted the expert help of James Brussel, a criminologist and psychiatrist. Together they developed what has become known as Criminal Profiling, a new science in American law enforcement.

Author/journalist Michael Cannell researched this case and created the non-fiction thriller Incendiary: The Psychiatrist, The Mad Bomber and the Invention of Criminal Profiling. He will speak on the subject and let the audience feel the terror experienced by New Yorkers who lived and worked in the localities where the bombings occurred when he comes to the Sandra and Alan Gerry Forum –Room 010 of the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering at SUNY Orange on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 7pm to speak on The Invention of Criminal Profiling.

This presentation by Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the College’s Criminal Justice Department is free and open to the public. A booksigning will take place after the lecture.

Cannell is a graduate of Princeton University and the Columbia University School of Journalism. He was editor of the House & Home section of The New York Times for seven years. In addition, he has contributed to The New Yorker, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian magazine, and many other publications. In addition to Incendiary…, he has authored two other non-fiction books: The Limit: Life and Death on the 1961 Grand Prix Circuit and I.M Pei: Mandarin of Modernism.

The Rowley Center for Science and Engineering is located at 10 East Conkling Avenue on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. Free parking can be found on street and in several college parking lots as well as the parking garage across the street.
