Art Through Our Eyes: An Art 101 Journey

Harriman Hall Student Gallery

Harriman Hall, 8 East Conkling Avenue, Middletown, NY

SUNY Orange Middletown Campus

Exhibition Dates: Monday, November 5, 2:15 pm – Monday, November 12, 12:15 pm

Opening Reception, Monday, November 5, 2:15 pm  – 2:45 pm

This exhibition stems from the visual glossary of styles in Lois Fichner –Rathus’Foundation of Art and Design textbook used in many of the Art 101 classes at SUNY Orange. Most of the students in Art 101 classes are not art majors.

The textbook is used for a basis of discussion about the basic components of art and design: the creative impulse, line, shape, value, color, texture, space, time and motion, unity and variety, focal point and emphasis, balance and rhythm, and scale and proportion. The class is part lecture, part studio exploration giving the students the opportunity to explore different artistic mediums.

This exhibition is a result of the following assignment on art movements/styles at the back of the textbook which lends context to the art and design components in the text. The assignment is designed to help the student develop an understanding that art reflects its time.

Each student is assigned an art movement and asked to create a five slide powerpoint on the movement to describe: the cultural and historical events that led to it, the leading figures associated with the movement along with examples of their art work, how the movement influenced art and culture, and what impact did it have. The final slide is the student’s reflection on what they liked or did not like about this movement. In addition, the students make a work of art inspired by this movement.

The students and art movements include: Denise Arenas-Olivares (Realism), Stephen Dore (Abstract Expressionism), Veronica Fiorello (Academic Art), Meaghan Halvorsen (Baroque Art), Kyla Ito (Expressionism), Cheryl Johnson (Cubism), Evan Kleinman (Dada), Ryan Kreischer (Fauvism), Karen McLaughlin (Surrealism),  Marylynn Meneses (Pop Art), Mala Persaud (Post War Expressionism), Shane Reynolds (Renaissance), Alexis Rodriguez (Feminist Art), Naomi Rodriguez (Minimalism), Jennifer Schock (Postmodernism), Gabe Soto (Op Art), Kayley Stevens (Post-Painterly Abstraction), Felix Viera (Constructivism), William Viera (Superrealism), Alyssa Williams (Romanticism).

The list of art movements is by no means comprehensive and has a heavy 19- 20th century European focus. The exhibition has been organized and curated by the students.
