The Harriman Student Gallery and the Arts and Communication Department of SUNY Orange are please to present The Tall Tales That Type Tells.

Long lists of uninterrupted texts have all but disappeared. Today, our text books, webpages, blogs, advertisements, labels, bill-boards, greeting cards, newspapers, and the like are dotted with expressive, exceptional, and emotive typefaces also known as fonts. These carefully crafted pages, labels, stickers, and packages are all around us, but how much attention, visual or otherwise, do we pay to their careful compositions? Do these two-dimensional designs simply happen, or are they, as so many writers are taking note, being carefully constructed to garner and tickle our attention? Scientific curiosity has turned to the many ways we read and why certain patterns can actually make the reader feel good!

The show will run through Dec. 13. The projects are presented by current students of ART 107-Design I. Harriman Hall is located Lower Level by Faculty Parking Lot 2. For more information, contact: Professor Susan Slater-Tanner at
