MINUTES OF THE ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 2008, AT 7:00 PM IN THE MUSIC ROOM, MIDDLETOWN, NY Present: Chair: J. Wolfe, Vice Chair, B. Hodge, A. Anthonisen, J. Brock, H. Gareiss (via telephone), M. Diana, D. Mirro Absent: R. Calderin, M. Murphy EXECUTIVE SESSION At 5:45 pm, a motion was made (Anthonisen/Diana) to enter into an Executive Session to discuss contracts according to Section 105 of Article 7 of the Public Officer Law, and no action was taken. At 6:00 pm a motion was made (Anthonisen/Diana) to close the Executive Session. I. CALL TO ORDER At 7:00 pm Chair Joan Wolfe called the meeting. II. CONSENT AGENDA A motion was made to approve Consent Agenda Mirro/Diana Items A � D as presented. Unanimous A. Approved the Minutes from the regular meeting held on December 10, 2007 as presented. B. Approved the petty cash report for December 2007 in the amount of $21.47. C. The Emergency Management Plan was included in the Board packet for Trustee�s review and will be voted on at the next Board meeting. III. PRESIDENT�S REPORT President William Richards reported to the Trustees about the topics below: > Introduced Maureen Larsen, who will conduct laptop computer training for the Trustees on 1/15 � 1/17 from 4 � 5 pm in the Music Room. > Enrollment is up 2 � to 3 per cent. A more accurate count will be provided on census day. > The Capital Campaign pledges are growing and have reached $325,000. > The Gilman Center is slated for completion by the end of February 2008. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be arranged some time in March. > President Richards is a member of the planning committee for the dinner to honor Sister Ann Sakac, the retiring president from Mount St. Mary College. The dinner will be hosted on Saturday, 5/10, and an invitation was extended to our Trustees. > On Thursday, 1/24/08 from 11 am � 3 pm, NYSERDA will host a green charette at the Newburgh Extension Center. JMZ Architects will also participate. The Trustees should contact Maryann Raab if they plan to attend. IV. REPORT OF THE COLLEGE GOVERNANCE SYSTEM Diane Bliss, president of the College Governance System, provided reports on the following topics: 1. Elaine Torda, English Department faculty and Coordinator of the Honors Program, was elected the Vice President of College Governance to fulfill the unexpired term of Bob Misiak, who stepped down. 2. The first results from the Student Feedback Forms administered online at the end of last semester have been received. Governance will be working closely with Christine Work to review the process, results and ways to improve the rate of return. Because this was the first time a college-wide instrument and online process were used, the return was low, as expected, and the results therefore are not meaningful this time around. Thus, results also were provided only to faculty at this point. 3. Joseph Zurovchak, Biology Dept. faculty, Executive Committee member and chair of the ad hoc Sustainability Committee, reported at the January Assembly on a number of measures and recommendations coming from the ad hoc Sustainability Committee, some of which have already been adopted or implemented. He will also be attending the upcoming �Green Charette� for the Newburgh branch campus, along with EC member JoAnn Hamburg and Architecture faculty member Pamela Rice-Woytowick. The committee�s first meeting of Spring semester will be on 1/24/08. V. REPORT OF THE STUDENT TRUSTEE Student Trustee Jonah Brock announced the following items: > Sports: * Men�s Basketball - Key players have returned and the season stands at 8 � 8. The next home game takes place on Saturday, 1/19 at 1 pm. * Women�s Basketball � Of all the teams on campus, this team is maintaining the highest academic average of 3.01, and their game record stands at 8-5. * InPulse �A Capella,� the hottest new vocal band from the Twin Cities will perform at the Shepard Student Center Cafeteria on Tuesday, 1/22 at 11 am * The Club Fair will be held on Tuesday, 1/31 from 11 am � 1 pm. * Student Life had a good turnout for the Spring Semester Student Orientations. Most of the students appeared very motivated. VI. OLD BUSINESS - None VII. NEW BUSINESS 1. A motion was made to approve the cancellation of the Hodge/Diana 2/11/08 Board of Trustees meeting. Unanimous 2. A motion was made to approve the Committee of the Whole Charter as presented, with one minor change. Insert the word Anthonisen/Mirro �topics� in paragraph one, line two after the word �specific.� Unanimous VIII. BOARD CHAIR COMMENTS Board Chair Joan Wolfe announced the following items: > Our past Student Trustee Donald Boyce was chosen to sit on the search committee to select the new New York State Chancellor for Education. > The Board committees� meeting and reporting schedule will appear on all future Board agendas. IX. COMMITTEE REPORTS AND/OR RECOMMENDATIONS Audit Committee - None Academic & Student Services Committee - None Governance and Nominating Committee � None President�s Performance Review and Compensation Committee - None X. COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC > Professor Malia announced that a negotiation session is scheduled in the next two weeks. > NYSUT will lobby the state legislators on 2/25 and 2/26. A contingent from the College will join her in Albany. One of the main topics the group will lobby for is additional funding for developmental education. > The NYSUT luncheon with the presidents of the SUNY Colleges and faculty representatives will take place at the Fort Orange Club, Albany, NY on Friday, 3/7.
