All LGBTQ+ students and allies are welcome!

Welcome to the online space for SUNY Orange's Sexuality and Gender Alliance student club--or SAGA. The purpose of this club is to support LGBTQ+ students on campus (Middletown, Newburgh, and virtually), as well as to serve as an educational resource to the college community.

SAGA's mission, as composed by the 2016-2017 club members, reads:

The mission of the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) club at SUNY Orange is to provide support for members of the LGBTQ+ community, promote acceptance and inclusivity for all individuals, and foster goodwill and outreach for the SUNY Orange community and beyond. SAGA is a safe space for people of all races, religions, gender and sexual identities, and abilities. We will listen to each other and facilitate active discussion to raise awareness of current social issues while maintaining diversity in thoughts and ideas. We will also work to help improve the campus environment for LGBTQ+ students.

This club became SAGA in 2016 when that year's group decided on a name change, but the presence of an LGBTQ+ club at SUNY Orange goes back much further: When Criminal Justice professor Robert Cacciatore joined the College in 2007, the previous club, SPECTRUM, had long been inactive. Based on student interest and desire for a club, Professor Cacciatore became the first advisor to the GSA: Gay-Straight Alliance. They drafted a constitution and Professor Cacciatore served as the faculty advisor through the Fall 2016 semester when he passed the torch to Professor Ándrea Laurencell Sheridan. That semester, the club voted to update the name, and then-Professor Steven Shaw (English) joined as a co-advisor. At the end of the Spring 2019 semester, the Newburgh campus established its own chapter of SAGA after a few unofficial semesters. Around that same time, Professor Elizabeth Carris-Swan (Math) volunteered to co-advise in Newburgh. The group is now joined between Middletown, Newburgh, and virtual students, with Professor Rebeca Rivera-Robayo officially coming on as co-advisor in the Fall 2022 semester, and Mike Castro in Fall 2023 to advise the Newburgh club.

SAGA welcomes students of all sexualities and gender identities to attend meetings or events. For more information, please reach out to us at clubs.saga@sunyorange.edu.
