TEACHER PREPARATION LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES DEGREE Foundations of Education Interest Area This degree is appropriate for students who: * Want to teach in public schools * Want to obtain a NYS Teaching Certificate * DO NOT want to transfer to SUNY New Paltz * Understand that after graduating from SUNY Orange, and from their chosen transfer school, they have to complete a Master�s Degree within FIVE (5) years. What should you do now? * If your academic strengths are in English and Social Sciences, choose the Associate in Arts Degree AA Liberal Arts: Humanities and Social Sciences with the area of interest being FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION. OR * If your academic strengths are in Math and Science, choose the Associate in Science Degree AS Liberal Arts: Math and Science with the area of interest being FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION. What courses should you take? * Depending on your Assessment test results, pick the English and/or Math courses you test into. (Schedule tests by calling 845-341-4070.) * Use the generic degree sequences for Liberal Arts AA and AS Degrees. * Education Courses can be used for the nine (9) credits of free electives in the AA Degree and the twelve (12) credits in the AS Degree. These courses start with EDU ___ and are found in the College Catalog and Course Bulletin under Education. (Most transfer colleges require a Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education course, which is EDU 207 at SUNY Orange. To teach in New York State, two certificates are required, both of which can be obtained in Mandated Training EDU 107.) * Other choices for Liberal Arts or free electives can be discussed with your advisor (see other side for acceptable Liberal Arts electives).
