If you can t find a book, are having trouble formatting your paper, are wondering what books you checked out please direct your questions to anyone at the front desk of either library. Library Director answers your questions In the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semester the library received over 100 responses to a survey about what you think of the libraries in Newburgh and Middletown. Susan Parry, library director, answers some of the questions and issues raised in the survey responses. If you have any questions or comments about the library and its services please bring your concerns to a library staff member. The purpose of the survey was to gather feedback from our users to help us to plan a better library. The survey feedback informed us as to what we are doing that works well, what we are doing that can be improved and what the students want us to start doing. One of the most interesting things we learned is that 50% of the survey respondents are using the library daily, 86.9% to work on class assignments, 65.1% to study, and 71.0% to use the computers. In addition 52.7% of the responders indicated that they have classroom assignments that require research. From these numbers, it would appear that the library is an important part of a student s higher education experience. Another interesting concern at the Middletown campus library had to do with the lack of available seating during the busiest times of the day. Most of the comments as you might expect focused on problems encountered in the library. Students want it to be quieter in the library, they want more fiction, more computers during busy periods and they would like the Newburgh library to open at 8 am. We are happy to say that we have taken steps to work on several of the concerns are reviewing ways to address those that require longer term planning-- such as extending hours. With the help of campus security we are addressing noise issues in a pro-active manner, and we have added a small quiet study area on the 2nd floor of the library. Unhappiness with the library photocopiers led us to purchase a scanner for the Middletown library. The scanner has been so well received that we will be adding two additional scanners, one at each campus library. We hope to purchase additional laptops for loan at the Newburgh campus library too. Future plans for the library will consider ways to expand seating within the Middletown building, a look at our fiction collecting policies and ways to address the Newburgh students concerns with library hours at that location.
