The Great American Smokeout is an annual event that encourages smokers to quit for one day.

E-cigarettes are known by many different names. They are sometimes called “e-cigs,” “e-hookahs,” “mods,” “vape pens,” “vapes,” “tank systems,” and “electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).” They are the most commonly used tobacco product among American youth. According to the Centers for Disease Control:

  • In the United States, youth are more likely than adults to use e-cigarettes.
  • In 2017, 2.8% of U.S. adults were current e-cigarette users.
    • In 2018, more than 3.6 million U.S. middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days, including: 4.9% middle school students and 20.8% high school students.
    • Among current e-cigarette users aged 45 years and older in 2015, most were either current or former regular cigarette smokers, and 1.3% had never been cigarette smokers.
      •  In contrast, among current e-cigarette users aged 18-24 years, 40.0% had never been regular cigarette smokers.
      • E-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women, or adults who do not currently use tobacco products. (CDC.gov)

Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which has known health effects.

  • Nicotine is highly addictive.
  • Nicotine is toxic to developing fetuses.
  • Nicotine can harm adolescent brain development, which continues into the early to mid-20s.
  • Nicotine is a health danger for pregnant women and their developing babies. (CDC.gov)

About The Great American Smokeout

For more than 40 years, the American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November.  The Smokeout is an opportunity for smokers to commit to healthy, smoke -free lives - not just for a day, but year round. This event challenges people to stop smoking and helps people learn about the many tools they can use to help them quit and stay quit.

It's hard to quit tobacco.

Addiction to nicotine in cigarettes - and e-cigarettes - is one of the strongest and most deadly addictions one can have. Quitting requires commitment and starts with a plan. It may take more than one quit attempt, and it requires a lot of support. Often, the younger one was when he or she started to smoke, the more intense the addiction and the harder to quit. Smokers are strongly advised to use proven cessation methods, such as prescription medications and counseling, to quit smoking. It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor or pharmacist to get their advice.
