In 1926, with the support of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), Carter G. Woodson officially created "Negro History Week" and designated February as a time for schools and the country to recognize and celebrate Black culture, contributions and history. Relentlessly driven by ASALH, fifty years leader the "week" became Black History Month (BHM). And, every year since 1928, this "powerful symbolic celebration" has had a theme. (More on BHM here.)

BHM's theme in 2023 is Black Resistance.

Founded by Woodson, and persisting throughout the 20th century, ASALH as an organization exemplifies Black Resistance. Accordingly, they provide a month of events in the spirit of this theme.

Four of these events (below) have been selected in hopes that you will be able to attend the virtual presentations (admission is free). On the Thursdays following these events (Feb 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd), the Office of Diversity will host in-person discussions driven by the topic and content of the events. (These Thursday discussions will be at 11:00am in Gilman 130 and announced in the Grapevine.)
