Solid Foundation: The Bass: Acoustic and Electric

Tuesday, 16 November, 2021
12:00 PM - 12:50 PM

Tony Marino has been playing the bass, that is acoustic and electric, since he was in high school when he switched from guitar so that he might participate in the music curriculum.

imageSoon after, he started his professional music career as the house bass player at clubs and resorts in the Pocono and Catskill Mountains providing back-up to a myriad of well-known entertainers. Since then, he has toured internationally with the Dave Liebman Band. He also has played several times at SUNY Orange with the Chris Parker Quartet and Septet. In addition, he is the bass in the String Trio of New York. Recently, he recorded CDs with The Kaleidoscope Quintet with world-renowned saxophonist Joe Lovano, and with Expansions, Dave Liebman’s Quintet, which performed at Dizzys in NYC.

Marino’s versatility and wide range of musicality has afforded him opportunities to accompany and record with numerous artists from jazz to folk to pop. The bass is a part of his being. When he is playing, Marino and his bass are one and the instrument is his voice.

Occasionally, he has been one of the members of the band to participate in music master classes at SUNY Orange. However, on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, he will present a master class starting at noon that is solely devoted to the bass. He will work especially with the members of the jazz ensemble. During the session Solid Foundation: The Bass: Acoustic & Electric with Tony Marino, he will explain the important place the bass holds in musical groups. Its essential role in both jazz and classical music is that it sets the rhythmic and harmonic foundation and presents the fundamental tone. He will also demonstrate technique and timbre of the two instruments called the bass.

This master class is offered in-person for music students in Orange Hall, room 24. The community is invited to join the class via the zoom link https://sunyorange.zoom.us/j/95582583467 Questions are welcomed.
