A Step Back in Time: From the Darkroom with Love

Selections of works from the Fall 2019 Darkroom Photography course are currently on view in the sliding glass vitrines in Orange Hall, First Floor Gallery, next to Orange Hall Room 12. The students explored introductory techniques of traditional black and white photography, processing their own film and developing their own prints, several for the first time. Stepping back from the immediacy and instant gratification of our “everyone is a photographer” cell phone culture, students were exposed to the trials and tribulations faced by early photographers including learning correct exposure, things not quite turning out, and the excitement of seeing their images emerge in the darkroom.

Photographers studied included Ansel Adams, Eugene Atget, Henri Cartier Bresson, James Nachtwey, Sebastiao Selgado, Henry Fox Talbot as well as presentations on a photographer of each student’s choice including Roy Decarava, Matthew Friedman, Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Jim Marshall, Andres Serrano and Cindy Sherman. Some of these influences can be seen in the work on view by SUNY Orange students Morgan Fracasse, Morgan Gaetano, Jules Garcia, Danielle Sharpe, Daniel Stukonis, Sebastien Tinsley and Amy Willis. Sebastien Tinsley’s “Harlem Nights” recalls Roy Decarava’s dramatic use of light in his portraits. Danielle Sharpe’s still life is reminiscent of Serrano’s dramatically staged still lifes. Dan Stukonis’ “Plum Point in Fall” and Jules Garcia’s “Knightwatch” recall Atget’s dramatic and atmospheric landscapes. For their final project, students were asked to photograph what they love. The results included portraits of favorite teachers (Morgan Gaetano), family (Jules Garcia) and landscape.

A Step Back in Time: From the Darkroom with Love includes selections of photograms, photographer’s choice and images from the final project theme “What You Love.”

The exhibition will be on view through March 13, 2020.
