Sunday, 29 November, 2020
On Friday, October 23, 2020, the co- leaders of the 18-piece Webber|Morris Big Band came via zoom at 11am to discuss music during the pandemic in their master class What do we do now? Musicians in 2020…
Anna Webber and Angela Morris are two highly talented multi-instrumentalists who focus on saxophone and flute. They interchange roles of player and composer/conductor of their band. Their musical compositions integrate improvisation and composition in a big band context.
During the music master class, they played original compositions on their saxophones and gave an overview of their avant-jazz music. They also shared performances of their band and then discussed with students the interpretations of the music as demonstrated by the individual musicians. In Webber’s composition, “Rebound,” she pointed out the building effect as more instruments and sounds were added. By referencing her piece “Both are True,” Morris explained mixed meter, chord changes, tone row, and multiphonics.
Webber and Morris also talked about how they as free-lance musicians are coping in this covid environment.
This master class program is now available as a video through November 29 by clicking HERE.
