Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce that the lecture presentation Transformation of the Woodbury Interchange at Route 17, Exit 131 and I87 - NYS Thruway which took place on November 10, 2020 via zoom was recorded and is now available for viewing through December 19. The lecture was presented by the two experts who oversaw all the work and process - start to finish - Scott Geiger, PE and Brendan Fitzgerald, PE. Scott Geiger, who recently retired, was the Director of the Office of Construction, NYSDOT. He holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech). Brendan Fitzgerald, who is Principal & Founding Partner of Hudson Valley Engineering Associates, was Resident Engineer/Construction Quality Control Engineer of the project. He received an AAS from SUNY Delhi and a BS in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Cornell University.
Topics that were discussed in detail with text, photographs and additional graphics include: project location with a brief history of its traffic conditions and need for improvement; project development effort and coordination with I-87 Interchange 16; outreach effort and funding challenge; the explanation of design-build delivery and the legislation -- NYS Infrastructure Investment Act -- that permitted its use and Alternative Technical Concept and re-evaluation; and, the accelerated construction finishing with project success.
