Master Class in Salsa and Latin Jazz by Oscar Hernández

4X Grammy winner and leader of the renowned Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Oscar Hernández, born and raised in the Bronx and now living in southern California, visited SUNY Orange on February 26 via zoom to give his Master Class in Salsa & Latin Jazz to the college community and community-at-large.

He explained how living near Spanish Harlem with its mix of Latin Jazz and American pop radio shaped his cultural musical sensibilities. He continued that at the time, he was immersed in the Latino Cultural revolution that was happening in NYC in the 60’s. By the end of his teenage years, he was a professional musician earning a living while playing with major bands.

“I am all about representing the best of my culture through my music” was his theme as he demonstrated that statement through several videos of his long-storied career during which he performed and recorded with almost every major Latin artist. Hernández enthusiastically continues his career as pianist/composer/arranger/band leader. His manner was very open to conversation and questions in this interactive zoom mode class.
