The Roma 'Gypsies' of Europe and African-Americans in the US: Parallel Histories of Oppression and Resistance

Tuesday, 13 April, 2021
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

A virtual lecture presented by Dr. Michael Strmiska historian in the Department of Global Studies at SUNY Orange

The "Gypsies" of Europe, more properly called the Roma or Romani, are a minority group in Europe that have endured discrimination over the centuries, including enslavement, and the 20th century targeting for extermination by the Nazis.

Today, they are often used as scapegoats by right-wing politicians and are subjected to persecution, harassment, and violence in many countries.

In this talk, Prof. Strmiska will sketch out the history of the Roma in Europe, explain recent developments in their situation, and also pay tribute to the amazing cultural contributions of Roma people-- from flamenco music and dance in Spain to Roma rap and pop stars in Hungary and Romania.

Dr. Strmiska will also discuss certain parallels between the position of African-Americans in US history and Roma in European history- both having suffered and endured much- yet managed to survive against what have often seemed impossible odds.
