Summer Scientific Research Programs

Wednesday, 29 September, 2021
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Now is the perfect time to start thinking about planning for next summer! If you are in one of the STEM fields, you may want to consider participating in a Summer Research Program. Come find out how on Wednesday September 29th, 3:00pm-4:00PM in RCSE 111 or on Zoom.

What is a Summer Research Program?

Gain experience doing scientific research with a mentor. These programs will teach you many basic scientific skills, and often other professional development skills. You will do background research, develop hypotheses, collect data, analyze data and prepare a final report. You will present your project to the group. Programs are available in all STEM fields.

When are these programs held?

Most these are held during several weeks (5-10 depending on the program) in the summer. Some are during winter break (Brookhaven, this one is just 5 days or so). Applications are typically due sometime between late fall (October) through early spring (most in January, some in Feb, March, April)

How can I afford to do this if I have to work all summer?

Most of the programs have generous stipend funding available to offset your lost income (you usually are not able to work while doing these). Additional funds are available through CSTEP. If you would like to apply to CSTEP click here.

Why should I do research over the summer?

There is simply no better way to get your feet wet in science. These programs will give you a taste of discovery, teach you cutting-edge technology, support your intellect, introduce you to other motivated bright students, open  doors to new opportunities.

SUNY Orange students who have completed these projects have been co-authors on scientific papers, been invited to present their results at conferences and been offered prestigious scholarships and learned just how capable they are.

Right now is the time to take advantage of these opportunities!! Many programs are eager to have community college students--just like you--attend. And many are only available to you while you are a community college student (just a few short years). Join us on Wednesday 9/29 3-4 in RCSE 111 or on Zoom (link above) to learn about how to apply.
