Kofi and Sankofa Drum and Dance Ensemble
Tuesday, 22 February, 2022
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Come to the Forum - room 010 in the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering for a lively celebration of Black History Month!
On Tuesday, February 22, 2022 from 11am to noon, Kofi and Sankofa Drum and Dance Ensemble will bring joy and community gathering to the Forum to everyone in attendance, in-person and via zoom. Kofi Donkor will explain how Drumming and Dancing provide a means of communication and Sankofa Ensemble will give a demonstration by performing on various drums with different timbres which are complemented by dancers, all in traditional, colorful attire.
Originally from the Asante Kingdom of Ghana, to which he attributes the cultural root of his art, Maxwell Kofi Donkor lovingly portrays how “These art forms mean everything to me - healing, wellness, life, spirit, sanity, identity, authenticity, balance. They bring about togetherness in building a healthy family, a healthy village, our local and global community.”
After graduating from the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana and moving to the United States, he attended Norwich University in Vermont where he obtained an MFA.
Since then he and Sankofa have successfully completed over 800 residencies in schools as well as the community, from conferences to festivals.
Join us during the Common Hour for a learning experience that will be fun.
Mask up and socially distance and be directly a part of the festivities or zoom in for a community-oriented experience at https://sunyorange.zoom.us/j/99481507534
This event is a collaborative effort of Cultural Affairs and CIDE, the Committee for Institutional Diversity and Equity at SUNY Orange.
