Paul Kane, PhD, of Warwick, NY, but of international acclaim, will present a poetry master class on Thursday, April 14 at 12:30pm in the Gilman Center, room 130 in the Library on the Middletown campus at 14 East Conkling Avenue, corner of South Street. Please feel welcome to join us.

This is an in-person event that will also be simultaneously transmitted through zoom link: https://sunyorange.zoom.us/j/94132868830

Entitled Visions & Revisions: The Art of Revising Poems, the class will focus on taking one’s “vision” and initial writing and then reworking it in structure and word usage. Through notations from several poets' archives, Kane will offer examples of different forms of revision. The discussion will center on poems by e.e. cummings, Elizabeth Bishop, Emily Dickinson, and T. S. Eliot, as well as one by Kane, himself. In addition, participants will be given an opportunity to try their hands at revising something they’ve written.

Paul Kane is an American poet, critic, and scholar. Awards for his work include Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Bogliasco Foundation. In addition, he received a Fulbright Award to the University of Melbourne to write a study of Australian poetry. This research and writing contributed to his being awarded an honorary doctorate from La Trobe University in Mildura, Australia. He is also considered an Australian poet.
