Why (and How) to Quit Vaping and Other Smoking Hacks

Thursday, 3 November, 2022
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Vaping (the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol produced by an electronic vapor device when it heats up its liquid ingredients) is popular among young people, especially college students:

  • Gallup says that 20% of people age 18 to 29 vape, compared to 9% of people age 30 to 49, 7% of people age 50 to 64, and less than 0.5% of people older than 65.
  • And, according to the Truth Initiative, 15- to 17-year-olds are 16 times more likely to vape than 25- to 34-year-olds.

But there are consequences to vaping:

  • E-cigarettes produce numerous toxic chemicals that are linked to lung disease, including acetaldehyde, acrolein, formaldehyde, and various heavy metals (American Lung Association).
  • Certain vaping products have caused more than 2,800 separate cases of severe lung injury (CDC).
  • Vaping has been linked to heart disease, lung disease, and severe lung injury.
  • E-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive drug. A recent CDC study found that 99% of all vaping products contain nicotine"even those that claim to be nicotine-free.

And, although it may be popular and pleasurable, many people wish to quit this habit.

However, quitting vapes may be as challenging as quitting cigarettes and other tobacco products that contain nicotine, a highly addictive and dangerous toxin.

Join us on Thursday, November 3rd at 11 am in the Gilman Center (library building) for a workshop on Why (and How) to Quit Vaping and Other Smoking Hacks with representatives from the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council of Orange County. We will discuss not only why vaping (and other tobacco products) are harmful but how to remove them from your life.

This is an excellent way to prepare for The Great America Smokeout on November 17, an American Cancer Society event for more than 40 years that encourages smokers (and vapers) to quit just for one day, in the hope that they'll quit the next day, and the next, until they've kicked the habit completely.
