Climate Change Zoom Lecture

Tuesday, 25 April, 2023
7:30 PM

Climate Change is part of everyday life nowadays. This reality is even more keenly brought to the forefront during April which has evolved into Earth Month from solely Earth Day, April 22, as a time when the Planet Earth is studied and discussed as to its not-so-faraway future.

This presentation offers architects, engineers, and municipal officers the opportunity of receiving one PDH-CEU for attendance and completion of a few short questions. Registration is required for seekers of PDH-CEUs. Register for attendance at cultural@sunyorange.edu with “for PDH-CEU” in the subject line. Only PDH-CEU seekers need to register.

This lecture presentation is free and open to the public. Enter the event through zoom link https://sunyorange.zoom.us/j/97118353904.

From his vantage point in the northern Adirondacks, Dr. Curt Stager measures the terrestrial impacts of climate change and the ecological histories of lakes around the world. Dr. Stager is the is the author of four books, his latest being Still Waters: The Secret World of Lakes. Through decades of firsthand investigations of lakes around the world Dr., Stager has “examined the significance” of human impacts on many of the world's inland waters. His collection of essays entitled Field Notes from the Northern Forest explores the natural history of the Northern Forest, one of North America's largest ecosystems. In his book Deep Future: The Next 100,000 Years of Life on Earth, Dr. Stager “draws on the planet’s geological history to provide a view of where we may be headed long term.” From his view and extensive research, he talks about the human impact in causing climate change and the possibility of an acidified ocean.”

Dr. Sam Bowser - Ice Dive

Dr. Pamela Hallock Muller received her doctorate in Oceanography from the University of Hawaii and has been a professor of marine science at the University of South Florida for forty years. By studying the geologic record and modern coral reefs, Dr. Hallock Muller “has gained insight not only into environments of the past and present, but also the effects of human activitieson the future of Earth's ecosystems.” As an oceanographer, her studies and research on coral reefs and reef-associated Foraminifera, have given her opportunities to understand global environmental change. With the atmosphere being flooded with CO2 and then its dissolving in and warming the ocean, she will discuss the implications and results of the acidification of the sea water.

Dr. Sam Bowser, who is an alum of SUNY Orange and University at Albany, and whose work led him to 20 Antarctic Polar expeditions and 184 dives to research living fossil Foraminifera, will introduce and present the concept theme of the acidification of the waters on earth. He will moderate the program and articulate the questions from the chatbox.

This event is funded in part by the Evelyn and John Morrison Donor Advised Fund.
