Willie Martinez and La Familia Sextet will be holding a concert of Latin Jazz on at 7:30pm on Saturday, October 14. For more information, click here.

On Thursday, October 12 starting at 2pm, a master class entitled “The Origins of Latin Jazz” will be led by Willie Martinez, master drummer and vocalist. The rhythm section of his ensemble La Familia Sextet will demonstrate as he, step-by-step tells the story as he learned it from his father.

Members of the rhythm section are Renato Thoms on congas and percussion, Jennifer Vincent on bass, Misha Tsiganov on piano, with Willie Martinez on drums and vocals rounding out the group.

This is a lively session as each musician explains by playing, different elements of sounds, rhythms, and instrumentation relative to Afro-Caribbean rhythm, harmonic structure, and improvisation.

Free and open to the public.
