imageJoin us for a lecture tour of the Stave Churches of Norway. Meet at the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering (RCSE) at 7pm on Thursday, November 16, 2023. Architect Andrew Warren, who loves to combine history with architecture has planned an educational talk with interesting details and lots of examples through the many photographs he has taken on site during trips to Norway. This event is free and open to the public.

Stave churches are medieval relics that were built during the time period of the 12th through 15th centuries in north western Europe. They provided a link between the pre-Christian Nordic culture and medieval Christianity demonstrated by the dragons-pagan guards against evil-next to religious art and crucifixes, common, incongruous combinations of these churches.

Today, only two still stand outside of Norway, one in Sweden and the other in the mountains of southwest Poland where it was relocated in 1842. Approximately 1300 were constructed. Of those only 29 of the original remain, and most have been repurposed as museums and/or used for ceremonial purposes. Some are very large and others are tiny. They are wooden structures of post and beam construction.

Andrew Warren has presented two other architecture-history lectures at SUNY Orange for Cultural Affairs: 19th C Fortification of the East Coast of the U.S. - The Unit Masonry Fortress in April 2014 and Montecelio: the Architectural History of an Italian hill town: Medieval construction two years ago.
