QPR: Suicide Prevention Training

Tuesday, 20 February, 2024
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 20-24. In 2021, over 48,000 people died by suicide"that is one death every 11 minutes.

One of the most prevalent myths about suicide is that once a person makes the decision to die by suicide, no one can prevent it from happening. This common belief has been shown over and over again to be false. QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Training teaches participants how to take part in identifying and helping people who are experiencing suicidal ideation.

SUNY Orange joins more than 150 colleges and universities in providing QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training for students, faculty and staff. The SUNY Orange Wellness Center has trained over 2,000 SUNY Orange students to become QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeepers.

QPR is designed to train people to recognize the warning signs of suicide, to learn how to ask the question, and refer someone to get help.

A free QPR training will be held on Tuesday, February 20th from 3-4 p.m. in Kaplan Hall room 111 at the Newburgh Campus.

These trainings will be held by QPR Instructor and Director of the Wellness Center Erin Rion. It is open to all members of the SUNY Orange community (students, faculty, and staff). Registration is not necessary.

For any questions, please call the Wellness Center at (845) 341-4870, or email Erin Rion at erinrion@sunyorange.edu
