Inclusive Advising Approaches - a customized workshop by Dr. A. Musu Davis
Tuesday, 12 March, 2024
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
This event -Inclusive Advising Approaches- is designed exclusively for SUNY Orange staff and faculty
SUNY Orange is about to enter its 75th year. A lot has changed since 1950 when most of the students were white males. Today’s student population mirrors our communities which are diverse in color, heritage, gender identity, and life experience. They come from many high schools as well as various backgrounds and times in their lives.
It is important that our students find a comfortable, safe place here that welcomes them while supporting their needs both socially and academically.
Dr. Adrianne Musu Davis, better known as Musu or Dr. Davis, is the Administrative Director of the School of Arts and Science Honors Program at Rutgers University. She has recently published a book entitled Black and Smart which explains her research focusing on the experiences of academically talented Black women in college inside and outside the classroom at urban historically white institutions. She, herself, was one of those high-achieving Black women in historically white institutions. In the book, interviews with several of these women tell how they carved out their lives and created positive environments.
During her time as a higher education professional, she has worked with campus programming, student organizations, student conduct, orientation programs, academic advising, as well as specifically supporting academically talented undergraduates.
Subsequently, she developed a varied set of programs she brings to individual venues.
On Tuesday, March 12 from 11am to 12 pm, she comes to the Gerry Forum 010 at RCSE to present her workshop entitled Inclusive Advising Approaches. For Newburgh campus participants, here is the link for this workshop: https://sunyorange.zoom.us/j/91078664599
She will offer strategies for creating more inclusive academic and social environments and building community so students feel supported, welcomed, resilient, and engaged, not alienated or excluded. The workshop will be customized to include the varied student population at SUNY Orange. She’ll bring case studies and small group work for short break-out sessions, and Dr. Davis will leave time for Q & A.
Dr. Musu Davis holds a BA in English from SUNY Oneonta, an MA in Higher Postsecondary Education from Syracuse University, and a PhD in Urban Education from Temple University. In addition, while attending SUNY Oneonta, she was a high-achieving student-athlete.
