2024 Solar Eclipse Viewing
Monday, 8 April, 2024
2:00 PM - 4:30 PM
On Monday, April 8, an astronomical phenomenon is happening! Come to SUNY Orange between 2pm to 4:30pm and experience the 2024 Partial Solar Eclipse at this great community event. See friends and neighbors and meet new folks - young and old. Bring lawn chairs.
Learn from the professors as you view the eclipse through telescopes with solar filters and solar glasses. Solar glasses will be available to share. If you already own a pair, bring them. No time is safe for looking directly at the sun in the timeframe of the duration. Solar glasses or solar filters on telescopes are necessary.
On the Middletown campus the event takes place on the Alumni Green with Astronomy Professor Tom Blon and Chemistry Professor Dustin McCall, plus assistants.
On the Newburgh campus the event takes place on Larkin Plaza with Geology Professor Anthony Soricelli and Chemistry Professor Jacqueline Bair, plus assistants.
Here is the Sequence of Solar Eclipse in Orange County:
Begins: 2:10 pm
Maximum: 3:25 pm - Magnitude: 0.937
Ends: 4:36 pm
Duration: 2 hours, 26 minutes
In addition, livestreaming of the progression of the eclipse within the United States from Texas to Maine will be available in the Gerry Forum 010 in the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering, Middletown campus and the OBTC Great Room 101 in Kaplan Hall, Newburgh campus.
This opportunity to view the partial solar eclipse with professors to guide and explain plus the livestreaming is free and open to the public. Take some time out of your busy schedules to come and better understand the solar eclipse. This community event is a collaboration of Cultural Affairs and the Science, Engineering, and Architecture Department with the cooperation of the whole college community.
