A mathematics professor who is a prolific artist? Finding the beauty in the everyday objects around us simply by noticing them in the right light? This was David Nolan.
He specialized in creating three-dimensional artworks from found objects which he repurposed. He started the practice of seeing the wonder of ordinary things when he walked the beaches in Suffolk County and continued these adventures when he moved to Orange County and went hiking through open fields and wooded areas.
David Nolan created hundreds of assemblages, some very simple; others with intricate parts. Each piece has its own personality which helps the viewer connect with it. They make you smile and laugh, and they make you think and question.
A selection of his assemblages will be exhibited June 9 through August 1, 2024 in the Retrospective: Highlighting the Artworks of David Nolan. The venue for the art show is the Mindy Ross Gallery, Kaplan Hall, Newburgh campus. Gallery hours: 8am to 8pm Monday through Thursday. The gallery and college are closed on July 4th.
The Opening Reception is scheduled on Sunday, June 9, 2024 from 2 to 5pm. During the reception which is open free to friends, family, and the general public, music will be provided by Joy Zelada, classical guitarist, who will play music from Latin America.
