Poetry Master Class by Jose Olivarez

Tuesday, 15 April, 2025
12:30 PM - 1:45 PM

Continuing on the second day of visiting SUNY Orange Tuesday, April 15, award-winning and highly regarded poet/author Jose Olivarez is presenting the second of two programs for students and the college community. All are welcome.

Tuesday’s event is a poetry master class which is scheduled in the Gerry Forum, room 010 of the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering. The timeframe is 12:30pm to 1:45pm.

Jose Olivarez will give a Reading of poems but for demonstrating his use of language as a conveyor of meaning. Being bi-lingual, he sometimes uses Spanish words in poems written in English because the exact meanings are slightly different from what those words would mean in English. He does not want the intended meaning to be lost in translation. He will talk about his process and incorporating craft elements into his works. During the class, he will also discuss facing failure and how to learn what is wrong  and how to turn that situation into a positive outcome.

The Monday and Tuesday events have different purposes and are fashioned around several scheduled classes. However, both are open to the college community for learning and interaction. Jose Olivarez is warm and welcoming and very engaging. So, come to one or both.

Jose Olivarez is an award-winning author, poet, and spoken word artist. In addition to his many awards, he co-hosts the poetry podcast, The Poetry Gods. He is also a graduate of Harvard University.
