Dr. Walter Jahn has given us two full semesters, 15 weeks each, of instruction through the Birds of Orange County and Local Wildlife and their Prehistoric Ancestors fall and spring lecture series, respectively. Now he is about to embark on a late spring through summer two-set mini-series of five weeks each. The topics are very different: The Human Body and The Biodiversity of the Americas.

To keep the momentum going from the spring semester series, the first of The Human Body Series is scheduled for Monday, May 19 from 5:30 to 6:30pm in the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering, room 110  (new location) or on zoom (same link) at https://sunyorange.zoom.us/j/98282281351

The topic is The Biology of Gender. This lecture will survey sexual reproduction in diverse modern organisms followed by a study of the biological factors determining chromosomal, gonadal, somatic, and brain gender in humans.

Other topics to be covered in The Human Body Series include Human Blood and Blood Tests, The Human Heart & ECG, The Human Brain & Behavior, and Human Respiratory, Digestive, & Urinary Systems. More information about these programs will be provided during the upcoming weeks.

Walter Jahn received his B.S. from Penn State University. He holds an M.S. from Widener University. In addition, he joined the Peace Corps and served as a teacher-trainer for two years. Upon his return, he enrolled in Temple University where he studied neurogenetics in Drosophila and obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. Professor Jahn teaches a wide variety of Biology courses including anatomy and physiology at SUNY Orange. He is a very engaging professor who is well-known for his activities in the community-at-large. He serves as the Basha Kill Area Association’s Nature Watch Co-Director, as well as, leader of diverse nature hikes and presentations at Mamakating Environmental Education Center. He is also on the board of the Orange County Audubon Society.
