Social Media and Your Mental Health: A Workshop, Newburgh Campus
Monday, 20 October, 2025
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Social media is:
- Helpful: I can connect and communicate with friends and family
- Easy: I can add messages, videos, images, and links in just seconds on my smartphone, tablet or PC
- Fun: I like seeing what my friends and family are up to
Social media is also:
- Intrusive: I can’t concentrate on my studies or tasks with a constant flow of messages blowing up my phone
- Anxiety provoking: I am often distressed or challenged by others’ posts
- Unhealthy: I lose sleep over late night scrolling and expose myself to a constant stream of images and messages I do not need to see
Love it or leave it, social media has a powerful place in our society and, in some cases, we must participate to keep in touch with current events, family and friends, even the College or our workplace.
Is it possible to use social media in a positive way that allows us to enjoy our connections without being overwhelmed or distressed?
Please join Wellness Center Mental Health Counselor Maureen Flaherty, MA, LMHC for an insightful one-hour workshop on Social Media and Your Mental Health on Monday, October 20th from 2 pm to 3 pm in Kaplan Hall, room 111, Newburgh.
In this workshop, you will learn:

- Current research on social media’s effects on mental health
- How to recognize warning signs of mental stress
- Strategies to prevent mental health issues related to social media
