Devised Theatre Master Class ~ the skills and methods in theatre training and the methodology for creating original plays

An inventive and high-energy theatre workshop-master class will be presented on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 on the stage of the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall, SUNY Orange. Devised Theatre Master Class ~ the skills and methods in theatre training and the methodology for creating original plays,will run non-stop from 1 to 3:45pm.

This class, which is free and open to the public, will be led by Tannis Kowalchuk, with the assistance of ensemble performer and SUNY Orange alumna Jess Beveridge. The focus will be on the physical theatre training necessary in building devised theatre productions. Exercises designed to help actors articulate energy for their imagination in the creative process will be introduced. Physical and vocal skills will be explored as well as group singing. Attendees will also be given chances to produce their own solo material, with direction from Kowalchuk.

It is highly recommended that participants wear clothes easy to move in. In addition, each person attending should bring one sentence from a favorite Shakespearean monologue.

Tannis Kowalchuk, a highly experienced actress and playwright who is well-known in the Hudson-Delaware Valley region as an originator of NACL theatre company, has recently formed Farm Arts Collective of Damascus, PA, a cultural organization committed to community building through four main pillars of activity: farming, art, food, and ecology. The theatre arts component builds community via ensemble and unique devised theatre productions.

Kowalchuk has a BA in Theatre Arts from the University of Winnipeg. She has been a guest artist/teacher at Rutgers University and Humber College in Toronto.
