Kimberly Mejia Named Outstanding Accounting Graduate

May 12, 2025

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – SUNY Orange accounting major Kimberly Mejia was recently honored as the Outstanding Accounting Graduate at the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) Mid-Hudson Chapter’s Achievement Awards Dinner.

This distinguished recognition is awarded annually to a student who demonstrates exceptional academic performance and meaningful service contributions throughout their undergraduate studies. It is reserved for those who are expected to excel in the accounting profession. Mejia received the award during a presentation on April 30.

A native of Newburgh, Mejia is a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy North and an alum of the NYS Pathways in Technology (P-TECH) program, a partnership between her high school, SUNY Orange and IBM. Through P-TECH, she secured a coveted internship at IBM, where she has worked for three years as a test technician, collaborating with engineers to verify hardware components before distribution.

Her interest in accounting was sparked while at SUNY Orange, where she immersed herself in coursework and professional development, including participation in a Careers in Accounting event that introduced her to alumni who had followed the CPA path. Mejia joined the NYSSCPA as a student member and has remained committed to pursuing her goal of becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). She is on track to graduate from SUNY Orange this month and will transfer into SUNY New Paltz’s bachelor’s degree program in accounting this Fall.

“This recognition is meaningful to me as it reflects the time and dedication I have put into my education, but it would not have been possible without the support of my amazing professors at SUNY Orange, who have consistently encouraged, motivated, and challenged me to reach my full potential,” said Mejia.

Beyond her academic and professional commitments, Mejia is an avid fiction reader and enjoys spending time with her family and her four-year-old Husky, Enzo. As SUNY Orange celebrates its 75th anniversary of transforming lives through education, Mejia stands as a shining example of the College’s legacy of student success and ambition. She is enthusiastic about what lies ahead and confident in her journey toward a rewarding career in accounting.
