OTA Students Gain Hands-On Experience

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – A pioneering partnership is transforming both student learning and childhood development in Orange County. This spring, four SUNY Orange Occupational Therapy Assistant students completed their Level II fieldwork at The Family Center, a growing community resource located within the Newburgh Armory Unity Center. Through hands-on, non-traditional experience, the students helped lead interactive parent-child playgroups that have grown from a few dozen to nearly 100 participants. In the process, they gained critical skills in early intervention, group facilitation and caregiver education.
The Family Center is part of a collaborative pilot initiative developed by the Orange County Department of Health and supported by SUNY Orange and Mount Saint Mary College students. Under the guidance of public health professionals and faculty supervisors, the students contributed to programming that fosters early developmental milestones, strengthens parent-child relationships and promotes community wellness.
Skyler Melenciano, one of the participating students, reflected on the experience, “One of the most rewarding parts of this placement was witnessing growth in both children and caregivers. I saw kids build confidence through play and parents gain tools to support development at home. Over time, the playgroup became a true community—full of connection, support, and collaboration. This experience deepened my passion for occupational therapy and reinforced the value of accessible, client-centered care. I’m grateful to the families, staff, and supervisors who allowed me to be part of such a meaningful journey and reminded me of the profound impact our profession can have on health, independence, and quality of life.”
In addition to Melenciano, students Kimora Persaud, Ashiana Brown and Kiyah Williams
also completed their fieldwork at the site. Together, they helped deliver free, 90-minute
parent-child sessions for families with children up to age five. Activities focused
on building motor skills, encouraging social interaction and introducing learning
through play in a safe, welcoming environment.
Their work reflects the mission of the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at SUNY Orange, where students apply their classroom knowledge in real-world settings that serve the broader community.
