Analice Soares Embraces Behavioral Sciences Program

June 22, 2026

Visiting family in Orange County for years, Analice Soares came from Natal, Brazil, just two weeks after her high school graduation in 2024. After touring the SUNY Orange campus, she decided to stay and apply for a student visa.

“The SUNY Orange website has an entire section dedicated to international students, and I was able to quickly learn what I needed to do before enrolling,” Soares said. “I was a little concerned about my English, as it was not formally learned, but I scored well on my exams.”

With a 3.45 GPA, Soares said she was shy during her first online and in-person classes in Spring 2025. She was homesick and worried about being accepted by the other students.

Nolly Climes, coordinator of human services and one of her first instructors, earned strong praise from Soares.

“He encourages everyone in his class to share and participate. You cannot sit in the corner or keep your camera off. Everyone is engaged.”

An internship with the Liberty Partnership Program in Newburgh gave Soares an opportunity to apply what she had learned in the classroom while gaining firsthand experience in the field.

“Working with 20 children over two semesters and being able to, at times, lead the group was amazing. I learned a lot, especially how to be flexible,” Soares said. “I appreciate this learning experience, but I think I will prefer to work in a one-on-one environment. My grandmother is a psychologist working with special needs kids, and I admire her work. My mom is a professor and my aunt is an engineer. I know my family is proud of me, and they support my decision.”

In Spring 2026, Climes invited her to speak at the Behavioral Sciences recognition ceremony in the Gerry Forum, located in the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering.

“I told him no,” Soares said, laughing. “But he persisted. He was encouraging, and I realized I needed to take all of the opportunities I am offered. Students should take whatever experiences they can while they are in school.”

During her speech, Soares spoke in English, Portuguese and Spanish while highlighting the accomplishments of five other students she worked with over the previous two semesters. She also encouraged students to pursue internship opportunities.

Despite cultural and lifestyle differences, including the emphasis on taking time out of a busy day to have lunch with family or gather for Sunday meals with loved ones, she has no regrets.

“I learned how to be an adult here,” Soares said. “This is a beautiful environment, and I am so happy I chose SUNY Orange. I am planning on attending SUNY New Paltz once I complete my degree here in the Fall and am looking forward to working in human services.”
