iPads and iPad Apps

The iPad

Apple s iPad is probably the most popular tablet computer on the market today. Although considered mainstream technology, there are many features of the iPad which make it uniquely suited to use by individuals with special needs, as well as within the special education setting.

Because the iPad is accessed by direct touch, it is very user friendly and intuitive to use. In addition, the iPad has many built-in accessibility features allowing individuals with visual or hearing impairments and physical disabilities to use it with independence and success.

Although there are no limits with regard to who can be assisted through the use of the iPad, individuals with autism and behavior challenges are making use of them to help with self modulation. In addition, iPads are being used successfully in behavior management plans as incentives and rewards, as well as for tracking trends in behaviors.

The iPad is also being used very successfully across many therapy arenas, Occupational Therapy being prominent amongst them. Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants are using the iPad in many creative ways to help individuals develop the skills necessary to perform activities and occupations which make life truly meaningful.

iPads are changing the lives of individuals with special needs in many ways. Another way this is being accomplished is through its use as a communication device.

Communication apps are available for the iPad ranging from apps allowing an individual to make a selection between two choices, on up to full featured communication apps allowing spontaneous and unique message creation. Speech/Language Pathologists are also using iPads during therapy to help students develop innumerable skills ranging from simple vocalizations to complex communication.

Today, iPads are being used successfully in education, and its use in the special education arena has been nothing less than amazing for some students. Currently there are more than 225,000 apps available in the app store with many thousands having an educational focus. Apple has developed both an Education Collection and a Special Education Collection of apps to make it easier to find appropriate educational activities.

Despite Apple s creation of app collections within the app store, the numbers of apps available can be overwhelming. Once you locate titles that appear to be appropriate, how do you know whether or not they are worthy of your time, attention and investment? Well, the SUNY Orange Center for Assistive & Rehab Technology can help! There are many resources available on the web listing apps that have already been vetted and used successfully. Some of these resources and their links are listed below.
