A.S. Degree in Engineering Science

Program Description

The Associate in Science degree program in Engineering Science is designed specifically to enable students to transfer, with junior status, to the upper-level engineering college or university of their choice, where they can complete the B.S. Degree in Engineering. As such, the program provides the same core courses that would be encountered in the first two years of study at most four year institutions offering degrees in the  following disciplines:

  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Architectural Engineering
  • Biological Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering, ChE
  • Civil Engineering, CE
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering, EE
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Geological Engineering
  • Materials Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • ME Nuclear Engineering

Core courses in Calculus, Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and Engineering Science constitute the nucleus of this program. Selected courses in the liberal arts support and enhance this central core.

The Engineering Science Program at SUNY Orange strives to form a student's ability to think critically in real time, to develop a professional work ethic built on cooperation and group problem solving and to provide the rigorous conceptual and ethical framework required in a field where professional competence is expected.

Our History

The Science and Engineering program at SUNY Orange has served students since the opening day of the college in 1950. Since that time hundreds of students have moved through our program to exciting careers in Chemistry, Engineering, Geology and Physics. Over the years a diverse faculty has been gathered from many excellent universities and all this experience is brought together for the good of the student. Throughout the history of our program, students have regularly reported back from their transfer upper-division colleges that they arrived there very well prepared. The success rate on transfer is virtually 100%. This is not surprising since our faculty meets annually with upper-division colleges to make sure that the transfer process is as seamless as possible. We are regularly assured by the upper-division colleges and universities that our students are well prepared and do extremely well in their courses.

Why SUNY Orange?

THE PROGRAM IS FLEXIBLE.

The Science/Engineering program at SUNY Orange is a university parallel program of study in Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics together with other liberal arts courses in English, Humanities and Social Science.

It is possible to complete the program in two years if one arrives at SUNY Orange at the proper academic level. Very often students will adjust the program for their own specific needs and complete the program over a longer period of time (usually three years). If a student has a heavy job or family commitments, this alternative is often a necessity. Also, it might happen that the student needs additional work on foundation courses.

Regardless of the circumstances, the student can complete the program with great success at the student's own pace. This flexibility is the major advantage of beginning your Science/Engineering study at Orange.

THE PROGRAM IS TRANSFERABLE.

The Engineering program provides a rigorous background in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Engineering Science. The courses are the same courses that engineering students would take at any university across the nation. Our students have transferred to many different colleges, with full junior status. Below is a list of some of the schools to which our students have successfully transferred to complete their degrees:

  • University of Arizona New Mexico Tech.
  • Buffalo University (SUNY)
  • University of Nevada
  • Binghamton University (SUNY)
  • Pennsylvania State University
  • Clarkson University
  • Rennsellaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)
  • Colorado State University
  • Stevens Institute
  • Illinois University
  • Stony Brook (SUNY)
  • Manhattan College

THE PROGRAM IS AFFORDABLE.

College expenses can appear to be very intimidating. One has to look on these expenses as a lifelong investment. But even with this long view, if you can reach the same goal (a B.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Engineering Science, etc.) with less cash outlay, the payback time for any borrowed money is greatly decreased. Current yearly tuition (plus room and board) at a residential college can run from $25,000 per year (SUNY) to $50,000 per year (private 4-year school).

It is in the context of these numbers that the current SUNY Orange tuition of $2,318.00 per year for NY State residents has to be considered financial affordable, especially that a 4-year school recognizes the work you do here. In planning your long-range future, it makes good common sense to give the SUNY Orange Option serious consideration.

THE PROGRAM WORKS!

For many students the small classes, the individual attention, the self-paced course selection and the quality instruction all work together to provide the key to success. Each spring semester SUNY Orange has numerous students enrolling who have had problems at a residential college. Their lack of success many times had little to do with lack of ability. These students simply needed more time to develop both intellectually and emotionally in order to face the rigors of study in the sciences. In the SUNY Orange environment students can focus on study, without the pressures of negotiating a very new lifestyle. Almost invariably these students say, "I should have come to SUNY Orange first." The simple fact is that students do succeed here and move onto four-year colleges and universities where they are also successful.
