About Coach Lauro

Coach Lauro  ... 

One of the longest tenured coaches at SUNY Orange, Coach Lauro brings vast experience coaching the game of basketball.  Coach Lauro has been successful in a career that spans decades.  He has coached at the high school and collegiate level as well as also leading medal winning teams at the Empire State Games.  Overall, John is approaching 550 career wins.

Under Coach Lauro, Orange has been a perennial contender and has appeared in many Region XV Championship games.  In addition to many All Conference and All Region selections who have played for Coach Lauro, he has also had two All Americans play for him.  Coach Lauro plays a very competitive schedule that features nationally ranked teams from every level of the NJCAA.

At the high school level, Coach’s resume includes four New York State Championships while at Tuxedo High School and 10 league titles at various schools in Orange, Putnam, and Westchester counties.  Equally impressive are the programs coach took over and turned around completely.  In 2002, Coach took over a Sleepy Hollow team that had gone 0-20 and had them to two Sectional qualifiers in 2004 and 2005.

Collegiately, John has coached at the NCAA Division 1 and 2 levels.  As head Coach at Pace University, John oversaw a team that was ranked in the NCAA Division 2 top 20 for four years straight.  While at Pace his teams participated in the ECAC Tournament, the NCAA Playoffs, the Empire State Conference Championships, and the Empire State Tournament Championships.  Coach’s success at Pace led to him being named the Converse Division 2 Eastern Region Coach of the Year.  After Pace, John also coached at the United Stated Military Academy at West Point and Mercy College.

Coach Lauro received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana St. University in Terre Haute IN and completed his graduate degree at Montclair St College in NJ and Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.
