Caps, Gowns, Stoles, and Cords

Cap & Gown

All graduates, faculty, and staff walking in the ceremony are required to wear academic regalia (caps and gowns).

All graduates are entitled to a cap, gown and tassel at no charge. The cap, gown and tassel are yours to keep as a memento of your achievement. Replacement tassels can be purchased at our bookstore for $5.00

Where do I pick up my cap and gown?

Caps and gowns will be distributed from the Bookstore at the Middletown Campus. You will be notified of the days and times of distribution by email.

Please be sure to continue to check your SUNY Orange email for important information regarding your Commencement Ceremony.

Can I decorate my cap?

Yes. You may decorate your cap but you must keep the decorations subtle so as not to obstruct anyone's vision. Also, abstain from any decorations that protrude from your cap that could intrude into someone elses' space, or harm someone.

Gold Honor Cords

Graduates who achieve a final cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher are eligible to wear gold honor cords with their gowns at the Commencement Ceremony to designate their achievement.  Qualifying May 2025 graduates and August 2025 candidates for graduation will receive an email from the Registrar’s Office during the week of Commencement letting them know whether they are eligible to wear a gold honor cord. The cords can be purchased for $15.00 at the Bookstore.

Qualifying December 2024 graduates will be notified in a separate email prior to their ceremony if they are eligible to purchase a cord.

Veteran / Military Stoles

Veteran graduates can request a stole designating their service branch. Contact the Center for Student Involvement at (845) 341-4015 or by email to adriennevictor@sunyorange.edu no later than May 12, 2025. Provide your name, mailing address and branch of service when making your request.

Other Stoles

Other stoles may be available through programs and organizations (e.g. Honors Program, PTK) .  Please reach out to the coordinators or advisors of that program or organization for more information.
