English and Math Placements

All incoming students will be assessed based on the following criteria:

English Placements

  • English placements will be determined based on students' high school GPA and/or grade in 11th grade English course or GED records.  If you have not done so already, please request that your high school send your high school transcripts to the Office of Admissions for review.  We cannot accept high school transcripts from students directly.
  • Students will be informed via email when their placement has been finalized.

Math Placements

  • Math placements will be determined in one of two ways, depending on which credential students have earned or will earn prior to starting at SUNY Orange:
    • High school diploma, homeschooled with a superintendent's letter of completion, or college degree: will complete the Math Placement Survey.
    • GED or High School Equivalency (HSE) or International High School Diploma: will complete an in-person assessment using Stemify.  Test dates and more information available on the Stemify sign-up page
  • Students will be informed via email when their placement has been finalized.

Students with College, AP or CLEP Credits

  • Students who have earned a C or better in a college-level English or math course or who have AP or CLEP credits in math or English may submit a Placement Requirements Waiver and upload an unofficial college transcript or AP/CLEP score report for consideration. Please only include COLLEGE/AP/CLEP TRANSCRIPTS with your waiver request. Unofficial high school transcripts cannot be used to review a placement waiver request.
